18 – 21 June 2026 | Romania & Serbia

The Summer Solstice Journey:
Trescovăț Peak & Lepenski Vir

The first planned settlement in Europe. A sacred volcanic mountain where the Sun rises twice on the Summer Solstice. The riverbanks of the Danube, on which European civilization is based, where Yoga and Meditation were already alive and practiced consciously 8,000 years ago. We’re going together there on 21 June, the International Day of Yoga.

What you'll do

A sacred volcanic neck, an 8,000-year-old settlement, the longest river gorge in Europe, and the moment the Sun rises twice.

01

The Core Journey

Included for everyone
01

Climb Trescovăț Peak (Vârful Trescovăț, 679 m)

A sacred volcanic mountain that was spiritually significant for our ancestors at Lepenski Vir. They built their entire settlement to face it. You stand on its summit. You watch the Sun rise behind it.

02
The Highlight

The Mesolithic settlement & the Double Sunrise

Pre-dawn crossing into Serbia. The Sun rises behind Trescovăț, then disappears behind a rocky outcropping near the summit, then rises again. The people who built Lepenski Vir read this Double Sunrise as the marker of the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, and oriented their entire settlement to it.

03

Lepenski Vir Museum

With a specialist guide over the original Mesolithic foundations, preserved inside the museum building above the original site.

04

Golubac Fortress

With a specialist guide. A fourteenth-century stronghold with nine towers where the Danube enters the Iron Gates.

05

Topolnița Cave Adventure (Peștera Topolnița)

One of the longest cave systems in Romania, with around 20.5 km of mapped passages, of which we explore a small section. We enter in neoprene suits. Optional mountain rappel at the entrance depending on water level. Zipline on the way out. The day is led by a speologist with a specialist accredited team handling all the technical equipment and instruction.

06

Iron Gates Boat Trip (Porțile de Fier)

Mraconia Viaduct, the Decebalus rock carving, the Boilers of the Danube (Cazanele Mari și Mici), Veterani Cave (Peștera Veterani), Trajan's Plaque (Tabula Traiana), and Ponicova Cave (Peștera Ponicova).

02

Ritual & Gathering

Together moments

Why we built this

The Meaning of this Journey

8,000 to 9,000 years ago, on a horseshoe bend of the Danube, people built the first planned settlement in Europe. Trapezoidal houses, every one constructed to a precise geometric pattern of 60-degree segments. Limestone clay floors mixed with ash and dung, hardened like concrete. A central hearth in each house, and at the back of each, a small shrine carved from massive river stones. In the middle of each floor, a shallow circular depression that archaeologists have read as an altar.

Every house faced the same direction. East across the river, toward a sacred volcanic mountain called Trescovăț. About 78% of them mirrored the trapezoidal silhouette of the mountain in their own shape. One archaeologist has read the entire layout of the settlement as a map of the Sun's movement, with each house functioning as a small Sun shrine. One archaeologist has read the entire layout of the settlement as a map of the Sun's movement, with each house functioning as a small Sun shrine, and the human figure embedded in the floor plan as an anthropomorphized representation of the Sun itself.

On the summer solstice morning, the Sun rises twice above Trescovăț. First above the flattened top of the mountain. Then again from behind a rocky outcropping near the summit. Then again from behind a rocky outcropping near the summit. Geospatial analysis has confirmed that the phenomenon was visible from the original settlement at the time it was inhabited, with the axial tilt the sky had then.

The Lepenski Vir double sunrise is the only one in the world known to fall on the Summer Solstice itself, and the only one around which a Mesolithic settlement was deliberately designed.

A double sunrise phenomenon also occurs in Rimetea in Transylvania in July, but the Lepenski Vir double sunrise is the only one in the world known to fall on the Summer Solstice itself, and the only one around which a Mesolithic settlement was deliberately designed.

In one of the houses, a skeleton was found buried in Siddhasana, a seated yogic posture. He died 8,000 years ago, and most likely left his body consciously, in Mahasamadhi. The skeleton is still in the Lepenski Vir Museum, where you will see it. He was not the only one. Yoga and meditation were alive on these riverbanks 8,000 to 9,000 years ago, carried west from the region of Kailash and Manasarovar. Kailash and Manasarovar. The Saptarishis, the seven sages, walked out into the world to plant the seeds of this knowing in different directions; one of them came through Central Asia, Turkey, and Eastern Europe, and the trace of his passage is still preserved in oral tradition along this path, even where the archaeology has been lost.

The Lepenski Vir settlement predates Stonehenge. It predates the pyramids. It comes from a time before writing and before the wheel. The Balkan Peninsula is considered, in modern archaeology, the cradle of old European culture. Some researchers have traced the linguistic, mythological, and spiritual archetypes of Europe back to this region, carried later in oral myth to Greece, where they were written down for the first time and the gods were lifted to the snowy peaks of Olympus.

We built this whole journey around the solstice morning. On 21 June, the longest day of the year and the International Day of Yoga, we will watch the Sun rise twice from the grounds of Lepenski Vir, in an open field near the museum. We will honor the ancestors who practiced what we still practice, in the place they practiced it.

The 3 days before it are how we get there. We climb Trescovăț itself, the mountain the whole settlement was built to face. We walk through Topolnița Cave in neoprene suits. We move by boat through the most spectacular section of the Iron Gates Danube Gorges. We trek the gorges of Cheile Nerei.

The Summer Solstice is, in the yogic tradition, the moment when the Sun turns south and the celestial body becomes most receptive to inner work. The body and the place are aligned. The 3 days before the sunrise are how we prepare to meet that morning.

That's the journey.

From the top, you can see the geography of the alignment we're going to watch the next morning. The original site of the Mesolithic settlement is directly opposite, on the other bank. For families

Coming with your child

This journey is family friendly, and we are happy when parents bring their teenagers.

Some of the most rewarding moments on previous Shambho journeys have been between parents and their children sharing something hard and beautiful together.

A few things to bear in mind before you register your child:

01

Minimum age is 15

The Trescovăț climb, the Topolnița cave day, and the early wake-ups can be a bit difficult. A 15-year-old who hikes regularly with their family will be in their element. A 15-year-old who hates early mornings and physical effort will have a hard time.

02

English is the working language of the group

Conversational English is enough for safety briefings, guide talks at Lepenski Vir and Golubac, and dinner conversations. Native or near-native fluency isn't required.

03

Legal documents for the border crossing on Day 4

Depending on your situation, this may include notarized parental consent and a valid passport or ID for your child.

04

Room sharing for families is easy

Triple share at the same per-person investment lets two parents share with one child (or one parent with two children) in a room with a double bed plus a single bed. For two parents with two children, two rooms work better. Mention your arrangement in the registration form and we'll work it out.

You know your child best. If you're not sure whether the journey is right for them, write to us before you register. We'd rather have an honest conversation now than have you both arrive into a journey that doesn't fit.

FAQ

Questions people ask

If something else is on your mind, write to us.

01

The Experience

Yes. Every activity is optional. If you'd rather not do the Topolnița Cave Adventure, please let us know in the registration form. We can offer you a reduction in the journey investment in advance, since we have to confirm numbers with the cave team ahead of time. We don't have an alternative activity to put in its place. You can still do everything else on the journey.

The phenomenon is astronomical. The only variable is weather: clouds or fog on the morning can prevent us from seeing the Sun cleanly. We monitor the forecast in the days before but go regardless, because the experience of being at Lepenski Vir at dawn on the solstice, the guided museum visit, and the place itself are worthwhile in any weather. Past observations of the phenomenon (documented since 2015) show clear-sky mornings are common in late June but not guaranteed.

No. No activity is mandatory and no background in any tradition or form of spirituality is needed to join. You can try what we have to offer or not. It will not affect the rest of the journey.

The menu for this journey is vegetarian. The food includes vegetables, fruits, dairy products and eggs, tea, and coffee. No meat or alcohol is served.

If you have a specific dietary need beyond vegetarian (gluten-free, vegan, allergies, kosher, etc.), tell us when you register. We will speak with the resort kitchen and come back to you on whether they can accommodate it.

02

04

Practical
